A few hours later, I had just come out of the shower to find Bastion on the phone.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, seeing the color drain from his face as he slowly put down the handset.

“Rage escaped,” he said, closing his eyes. “He incapacitated three marshals and took off into the desert.” Bastion wrapped me in his arms and kissed me softly. “Are you okay?”

“Do you think he’ll come after us?” The look in my brother’s eyes when I shot him was eating me up, but I knew that it was the right thing to do. I couldn’t let Bastion die.

“Maybe,” he said, “but he won’t get near you.” He kissed my forehead and I felt safe in his arms. No matter what, I knew that Damien loved me. He wouldn’t hurt me.

But I wasn’t so sure about everyone else.

Still, I thought, pulling back to look at my handsome lover, life was full of challenges. What would happen, would happen. And we would meet it together when it did.
